The Southern Cross of Honor award, which later became the Cross of Military Service, originated on Oct. 13, 1862 as an act of the Confederate Congress to recognize the courage and good conduct of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Confederate army. Edith Alice McClain was born on September 11, 1900. She married John Ewell Schwartz and both worked at the Walnut Street Pharmacy in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, from approximately 1935 until 1980. She was a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and conducted genealogical research. Edith Schwartz died on June 14, 1989.
